MESA Brochure On ICT Opportunities 2030 Maritime Connected And Automated Transport

Maritime transport is a major economic contributor in the EU as well as a necessary component for the facilitation of international and inter-regional trade on which the European economy is fully dependent. In recent years, advances in information and communication technologies have created a demand for new forms of surveillance and information management systems; these are increasingly driven by policy and governance addressing safety, security, and sustainability. Digital information exchange technologies between the different actors involved in maritime transport, including automated data exchanges, have undoubtedly the potential to deliver huge opportunities and benefits.

Work package 5 of MESA will eventually deliver a foresight report which will be based on three distinct contributions: market, societal and regulatory trend reports. To facilitate uniform contributions, the present report outlines the relevant studies and methodologies to be used. Available studies for use within the following tasks are briefly evaluated and the most relevant studies are suggested for future use. Following a review of available foresight methodologies, the Delphi-method is suggested to be used by the working groups to assess the impacts of reported trends on the maritime industry.

D5.2 - Framing the Innovation Agenda and Implementation Plan

The present study is approaching the possible enlargement of the Waterborne SRA with the inclusion of the innovation activities. Starting with a look of the European initiatives for the promotion of innovation, other industrial sectors both in the transport area (road, air, train)and in different other areas are taken into consideration. In particular a description of the structure of their research and innovation agenda is described. The second part of the study is focusing on the Waterborne reality, describing the actual status of the strategic documents and providing concepts for the framing of the “innovation” agenda, strictly connected with the “maturity” of the research achievements, introducing the TRL (Technology Readiness Levels). The third part is devoted to the description of possible innovation metrics, suitable to structure a methodology to measure the propensity to innovation of the maritime sector and to benchmark it with other industrial sectors.
