The University of Piraeus is a Greek public University located in Piraeus, Greece. It comprises ten academic Departments with a focus on Business Management, Computer science, Economics, Finance and Maritime Studies. This University is the second-oldest business school established in Greece. Founded in 1938 by the Industrialists and Tradesmen Association under the name "School for Industrial Studies", its original aim was the advanced training of managerial executives. In 1966, it became a public university, and in 1989, it received its present name.
The Department of Maritime Studies, was founded in 1989 and lists almost 6000 graduates in its 30 years of operation. Its mission is to provide the highest quality of educational services and research in the field of Maritime Studies, creating an ongoing influence in the global maritime community. According to the statistics of the Department, 60% of the graduates are employed in organizations in the shipping sector after completing their studies, while the remaining 40% continue their studies at postgraduate and doctoral level. The Department offers five postgraduate programs. The longest running is the M.Sc. in "Shipping" which was founded in 2002. The program interacts with the Research Laboratories, and in particular the Quantitative Analysis in Shipping Laboratory, to support its research activities.
