Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt
German Aerospace Center
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) conducts research and development in aeronautics, space, energy and transport, security and digitalisation. DLR's maritime activities focus on developing technologies for the decarbonisation, automation, and digitalisation of maritime transport. The emphasis is on low-emission propulsion systems, intelligent ship navigation, and integrated traffic concepts to significantly enhance the sustainability and efficiency of the maritime sector.
DLR uses the expertise of its 55 research institutes and facilities to develop solutions to these challenges. Our 10,000 employees share a mission – to explore Earth and space and develop technologies for a sustainable future. In doing so, DLR contributes to strengthening Germany’s position as a prime location for research and industry.
In Waterborne, the DLR is represented by its Institute of Maritime Energy Systems. The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems develops, optimises and integrates systems for emission-free ship operations. This includes energy-saving propulsion systems, on-board generation of electricity, heating and cooling, high-performance fuel cells, optimised ship designs and safe on-board energy storage. It also deals with the distribution, bunkering and infrastructure for zero-emission fuels on board and in harbours as well as the development of transport concepts for alternative fuels.
