Fondazione Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici
CMCC (Fondazione Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici) is a non-profit organisation established in 2005 with the aim of investigating and modelling our climate system and its interactions with society. CMCC maintains and operates a modern high-performance computing facility, used for running climate and ocean models, as well as numerical applications for providing a societal benefit. CMCC is internationally active in many projects and partnerships, hosts the national focal point of Italy for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and is a production unit for some ocean forecasting products of the Copernicus Marine Service.
CMCC’s expertise includes ship voyage optimisation through the VISIR-2 model and Lagrangian dynamics of hydrocarbon spills and plastics through the MEDSLIK-II model. Both applications can work with coastal hydrodynamic forecasting products. VISIR-2 is an open source model being developed for computing safe and efficient routes through meteo-marine forecasting products, path optimisation, and vessel performance modelling. Furthermore, CMCC continuously develops a capacity in visualising dynamic multi-dimensional ocean fields through web services and mobile apps.
