CEREMA
CEREMA (which stands for Centre for Studies and Expertise on Risks, the Environment, Mobility and Urban Planning) is the French major public agency for developing and capitalising on public expertise in the fields of planning, regional cohesion, and ecological and energy transition. It has a staff of 2,600 people out of which 500 are dedicated to research and innovation activities.
As a multidisciplinary scientific and technical resource and expertise centre, CEREMA provides assistance in developing, implementing and assessing public policies at national and local levels, where the challenges of the ecological transition & regional cohesion are paramount. It offers a unique state-of-the-art high-level expertise in the areas of mobility, land-based and maritime transport infrastructure, urban planning and construction, resource conservation, risk prevention and coastal erosion, road and maritime safety, and the ability to integrate these different skilss into developing territorial projects.
CEREMA provides direct support to governmental services, local and regional authorities as well as companies in its fields of expertise, whether at national, European or international level.
In the maritime and inland waterway field, CEREMA is actively working on strategic innovations workstreams related to Green Ship (Air quality, dock equipment for decarbonised ships, etc.), smart navigation (applying the digital transition to shipping: navigating simulators, traffic analysis and forecasting, environmental date forecast and management...), Marine renewable energies within the scope of Maritime Spatial Planning, Smart ports, Smart off-shore industries (Multi-usage offshore platforms (MUOP)), and Safety (Fluvial Information Systems, Collision de-risking...), etc..
CEREMA contributes to the promotion of maritime frontrunning innovations through the Harbour of the Future Award, one of the highlight events of the Harbour of the Future High-Level European Coference. The 2019 Trophy awarded 3 innovations: zero-emissions barge with hydrogen fuel cells; ship mooring recycling and a satellite environmental characterisation service for maritime water quality near ports.
CEREMA was established in 2014 as the result of the merger of several public agencies and is under the supervison of the Ministry for the Ecological & Inclusive Transition, and the Ministry for Regional Cohesion and Relations with Local Authorities.
